Next Weekend in San Francisco: Potrero Hill Festival, Shipyard Open Studios and a Light Show on a Crane (Oct. 17, 2026)

Mark your calendar for Saturday, October 17
I am posting this six days early on purpose. Next Saturday, October 17, 2026, three things are happening on the east side of San Francisco, and all three are free. You could do every one of them in a single day without crossing town.
There is also a good option in Marin the same afternoon, which I will get to at the end.
Stop one: the 51st Potrero Hill Festival
The Potrero Hill Festival is in its 51st year. It runs Saturday, October 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on 20th Street, across four blocks, according to potrerofestival.com.
Expect live music and food. The festival benefits Daniel Webster and Starr King elementary schools and the after-school programs at the Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, per the festival's site.
I like this one because it is a true neighborhood event. If you have never walked 20th Street on a clear day, look up from the food for a minute. The skyline is right behind you.
My advice is to go early. Start here at 10 a.m., eat lunch on the street, then head to the Shipyard.
Stop two: Shipyard Open Studios
Shipyard Open Studios is the same Saturday, October 17, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 451 Galvez Avenue. More than 130 artists open their studios, and both admission and parking are free, according to the Funcheap listing for the event.
Free parking alone makes this unusual for a San Francisco event. The bigger draw is the chance to walk into working studios and talk with the people who make the art. If you have bare walls in a new home, this is a far better afternoon than scrolling for prints online.
You do not need to know anything about art to enjoy it. Walk in, ask questions, and see what stops you.
Stop three: CRANE, after dark
This is the one I am most curious about. CRANE is a 40-minute multimedia light show on the Hunters Point Shipyard crane, SFist reported on October 2, 2026. It runs two nights, Friday, October 16 and Saturday, October 17, from 5:30 to 10 p.m.
The crane itself is worth knowing about. It is nearly 500 feet tall and was built for the Navy with a 630-ton lifting capacity, according to SFist.
Read this part carefully before you drive out. SFist reports there is no public audience at the base of the crane. There are two ways to watch. One is a free livestream at crane.video, which you can put on from your couch. The other is an in-person watch party at Building 101.
So do not plan on walking up to the crane. Plan on the livestream or the watch party.
How I would put the day together
Morning on 20th Street at the festival, starting at 10 a.m. Early afternoon at the Shipyard studios, which stay open until 6 p.m. Then either the watch party at Building 101 or home in time to pull up the livestream once the show starts at 5:30 p.m.
That is a full day on the east side of the city, and the festival, the studios and the livestream are all free.
In Marin instead? The Hops and Vines Stroll
If you are north of the bridge next Saturday, downtown San Rafael has the Hops & Vines Stroll on October 17 from 2 to 6 p.m., according to downtownsanrafael.org.
Check-in is at City Plaza at Court Street, 1000 Fourth Street. Tickets are $35 in advance and $45 the day of the event, and it is for ages 21 and over. This one is not free, so buy ahead if you know you are going.
Why a Realtor writes a weekend guide
When people ask me where they should live, I tell them to spend a Saturday there before they look at a single house. A festival day is a good test. You see how the streets feel on foot and whether you can picture your own weekends there.
Events like these are a big part of why people tell me they are looking on the east side of the city. If that is you, my San Francisco page is a good place to start reading.
If I missed something happening next weekend, tell me and I will add it.
And if a Saturday on Potrero Hill gets you thinking about a move, reach out. I will send you a free home value report for the place you own now, or this week's list of homes that are not on the portals yet.
