Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2026: A Neighbor's Guide to the Free Weekend in Golden Gate Park
The free weekend
Hardly Strictly Bluegrass is back in Golden Gate Park Friday, Oct. 2 through Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026, spread across Hellman Hollow, Lindley Meadow and Marx Meadow. It is free, as always. Hours are Friday 1 to 7 PM and Saturday and Sunday 9 AM to 7 PM, with 71 concerts on six stages, and organizers expect more than 750,000 people over the three days (SF FunCheap, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2026 guide). The festival was founded and endowed by the late Warren Hellman, which is why it stays free.
This year's lineup includes Robert Plant with Saving Grace, Emmylou Harris, My Morning Jacket, Old Crow Medicine Show, Steve Earle, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Molly Tuttle and Mavis Staples (SF FunCheap, HSB 2026 guide). If you are reading this Sunday morning, you still have a full day of it left.
If you live near the park
I work with a lot of people in the Inner Sunset, the Richmond and Cole Valley, and the first weekend in October is one of those weekends where living near the park cuts both ways. Here is what I tell friends and clients, none of it scientific, all of it learned by walking over.
Parking. Do not plan on it. Street parking in the blocks around the meadows fills early, and the park's interior roads are not the place to look. If you live nearby, the best thing you can do with your car this weekend is leave it where it is. If you have guests coming, tell them to take transit and meet you at a corner, not at your door, so they are not circling your block.
Walking. This is the way. From the Inner Sunset, the Richmond or Cole Valley, the meadows are a walk, and the walk is part of the day. Bring layers, because the west side of the park does its own weather, and bring a blanket or a low chair. A Sunday afternoon at Hellman Hollow with a good headliner is as good as this city gets.
Transit. Muni gets crowded on festival weekends, but it works. Give yourself extra time, expect full trains and buses on the lines that serve the park, and expect the same on the way out. Check Muni for service changes before you go rather than assuming your usual line is running normally.
A few practical notes
Go early on Saturday and Sunday if you care about your spot. The music starts at 9 AM (SF FunCheap, HSB 2026 guide), and the meadows in front of the main stages fill well before the headliners. Pick one or two acts you actually want to see and plan around them rather than trying to bounce between all six stages. Bring water and food, or budget time for the vendor lines. Cell service in the meadows gets thin when a crowd this size is on it, so set a meeting point with your group before you split up. And be a good neighbor on the way out: the walk home through the Inner Sunset and the Richmond is where the festival meets the people who live here.
Next up: Fleet Week
If you want a quieter weekend, this is not the one, and neither is the next. Fleet Week 2026 runs Oct. 4 through Oct. 12, with the air show Oct. 9 through 11 (SFGuide / SF Chronicle, Fleet Week 2026 guide). The two events overlap today, Sunday, Oct. 4. If you live on the north side of the city or in Marin, plan for air show practice days and the bridge and waterfront traffic that comes with them later in the week.
Why people love living near the park
Every year, someone asks me why buyers pay what they pay for a house in the Inner Sunset or Cole Valley when the same money buys more square footage elsewhere. This weekend is part of the answer. A free, world-class festival you can walk to, the park as your front yard the other 51 weekends, the fog rolling in over the meadows in the late afternoon: that is what people are buying when they buy near Golden Gate Park. It is why the Newsom childhood home on Stanyan Street, a short walk from the park, drew the attention it did this week, and why homes in these neighborhoods rarely sit long.
If you are curious what living near the park costs right now, or you are thinking about selling a home in the Inner Sunset, the Richmond or Cole Valley, take a look at my San Francisco page or reach out. See you at the meadows.
